Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “The Wawews 15683 Hiller-Furrower Kit Rear Tine Rototillers for Earthquake, Husqvarna, Southland, Powermate, Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet Rear Tine Rototillers, Adjustable Wing, Three Kinds of Connection Red also works with the DR PRO XLDRT Rear Tine Rototiller. I have not actually gotten to use it yet but, it fit my DR tiller and adjusts fine, and it seems to be sturdy and durable enough for the task. This appears to be a quality designed and manufactured kit with all sturdy steel parts and hardware. It was pretty quick and easy to assemble, and the most difficult part was deciding which attachment device to use. I won’t be certain until I actually get to use it where I use my tiller but, I think I’ll be able to remove the wings and get the results I’m looking for. If this assembly works like I believe it will, it will eliminate hours of time and effort in prepping for seeding of our food plots. I’m extremely satisfied with the quality of this furrowing kit and consider it an outstanding value!”

Customer Review: “This is pretty good quality. About what you would expect for the $50 cost. It’s strong enough to hold up in freshly tilled soil which is the most important thing. Assembly is straight forward. You just bolt it together and then bolt to your tiller. Look at the pictures of the plow and check that against your specific tiller to make sure it’ll bolt on. If not you can easily weld a bracket to your tiller. Assuming you can weld. Keep in mind this for a good sized tiller. If you have a light weight tiller you’re not going to have the needed traction. The finish is decent. If you don’t want it to rust you need to keep up on the maintenance. Pressure wash and hit it with paint when you’re finished. The plow functions very well and makes nice rows. They might be too wide for some people though depending on what your planting. Better than no rows though. For durability I would give it probably 4 stars. If you start ramming into roots and rocks you’ll damage it. Just keep in mind it’s not 1/4″ thick steel it’s medium thickness intended for tilled soil. Good value at $50.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “This tiller is a beast! I used it on my 1-acre garden and it handled everything from clay to roots with ease. The engine starts reliably, and the tines go deep without bogging down. Assembly took about 45 minutes, but the instructions were clear. My only gripe is the lack of a depth adjustment lever—you have to manually adjust tines each time. Still, for the price, it’s unbeatable. I’ve used it weekly for two seasons with no issues.”

Customer Review: “I bought this for a small backyard garden, but it’s overkill for that. However, when I rented it for a community garden project, everyone was amazed at how fast it worked. It’s loud and heavy, but powerful. The recoil start can be tricky in cold weather, but once running, it’s smooth. Great value if you need serious tilling power.”

Customer Review: “Powerful and easy to handle. I had some rough ground to chew up and a tine broke on the left and right. Blades are not covered by the Warranty so I went on Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s and general on-line searches for replacement tines. I found nothing anywhere even the Wild Badger website. I wrote to the Company looking to purchase replacement tines. They didn’t have any in stock. I just wanted to know where to buy them. They sent me two replacement assemblies for no charge. Platinum level customer service. I would have paid because it was my fault by man-handling through roots from a nearby tree. It performs great, just be mindful of healthy roots!”

Customer Review: “It is the best balance of price and quality. Easy to assemble, powerful and classy looking unit, this is an amazing lightweight powerhouse for the job, I’ve plowed through weeds with the tiller and removed the debris with the steel tine holder and it’s very effective. Definitely worth the purchase. I highly recommend it. Super easy to use, very happy with this purchase”

Complete Buying Guide for Rear Tine Tiller

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best rear tine tiller for large garden use, several key factors come into play. Engine power determines how well the tiller handles tough soil, so look for at least a 40cc engine for mini models or 200cc+ for full-size tillers. Tilling width affects efficiency—wider models cover more ground faster, which is crucial for large yards. Durability is equally important; rear tine designs offer better traction and control, especially on slopes or hard-packed earth. Additional features like adjustable tines, depth control, and easy-start mechanisms can make a big difference in usability and long-term satisfaction.

Budget Planning

Your budget will significantly influence your choice. Entry-level mini cultivators like the Wild Badger or GardenTrax start around $200–$300 and are great for light to medium-duty tasks. Mid-range models such as the Powerhorse 212cc typically cost $400–$600 and offer more power and width for larger gardens. Premium kits like the Hiller-Furrower system range from $100–$150 and are ideal if you already own a compatible tiller. Always factor in potential add-ons like replacement tines, fuel, and maintenance when planning your investment. Remember, a slightly higher upfront cost often means longer lifespan and better performance.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right rear tine tiller for large garden work doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on your specific needs—whether it’s row creation, deep tilling, or light cultivation—and match that to the machine’s capabilities. The models reviewed here represent the best balance of performance, durability, and value. Whether you go with a standalone tiller or a conversion kit, investing in quality will save you time and frustration down the road. With the right tool, preparing your garden becomes faster, easier, and more enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a rear tine tiller and a front tine tiller?

A: Rear tine tillers have the engine and tines mounted behind the wheels, which provides better weight distribution, improved traction, and smoother operation on slopes and uneven terrain. Front tine tillers place the engine and tines in front, making them lighter but less stable on large or sloped gardens.

Q: Can I use a rear tine tiller on clay soil?

A: Yes, but clay soil is one of the toughest to till. Rear tine tillers are better suited for clay than front models because their weight helps penetrate compacted earth. For best results, consider pre-loosening hard patches with a shovel or broadfork before tilling.

Q: How deep can a rear tine tiller go?

A: Most residential rear tine tillers can dig between 6 to 10 inches deep. Some heavy-duty models go deeper, but going too deep can bring up buried debris and damage the tines. For most gardens, 6–8 inches is sufficient for seedbed preparation.

Q: Do I need a hiller-furrower kit for planting rows?

A: A hiller-furrower kit attaches to your existing rear tine tiller and creates neat, straight rows for planting. It’s especially useful for vegetable gardens or food plots where consistent spacing is important. Without it, you’ll need to manually mark and dig rows.

Q: Are electric rear tine tillers available?

A: Electric rear tine tillers exist but are rare due to the high torque required for deep tilling. Most electric models are cultivators or mini tillers designed for light-duty work. For large gardens, gas-powered rear tine tillers remain the most practical choice.

Finding the best rear tine tiller for large garden use starts with understanding your specific needs and matching them to the right machine. Whether you prioritize power, versatility, or affordability, the models we’ve reviewed offer proven performance and reliability. From the universal compatibility of the Hiller-Furrower Kit to the rugged power of the Powerhorse 212cc, each option brings something valuable to the table. Remember to consider soil type, garden size, and frequency of use when making your decision. With the right tiller, preparing your large garden becomes a manageable—and even enjoyable—task.
