Customer Reviews
Customer Review: We gave this item a 5 star, not because the seeder works great, which I’m sure it will once is together, but because this company is GREAT to deal with. In the process of assembling the seeder, we found we were missing some parts. We contacted the company. They replied the next day, asked what we needed and the parts we’re shipped. Though the directions for assembly are somewhat difficult to follow, I would not hesitate to buy from this company again! UPDATE: Suchtale was great sending the missing parts but it’s been over a week and the parts are caught up in shipping. They’ve been in a port in Japan for five days and don’t seem to be going anywhere at this point.

Customer Review: 1st, Amazon sent me one that was clearly opened where someone had attempted assembly, gave up, and sent it back in as some bolts had nuts on them and some tell tale markings inside of screws. Agreed that all these nuts and bolts are primarily in one bag and counts are random. I was missing a huge washer for wheel and was lucky I’m a mechanic and had a spare that would fit over the axle. The assembly was annoying due to the above and having to sort nuts and bolts. But what makes it worse is that with them all being in one bag, you can’t determine what is what as the instructions tell you what to use, but unless experienced with m5 m6 measurements, you have no clue. Assembly took about 2.5 hours or so. Once it’s put together it wasn’t bad until it was. The spikes are sharp and do okay with semi damp soil. They don’t puncture dry too much if it isn’t super weighed down. The spreading is questionable. Some basic 20 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass I realized wasn’t even dropping out with the lever set at 2.5 out of 6. Moved it to halfway which helped. Largest problem is in what another reviewer stated that I missed. This has to aerate in order to spread. So if you want to drop grass seeds and then some fertilizer, you’ll still have to have the spikes in the ground as that’s the only way the spreader rotates via a chain connected to spike rod. This thing is too much trouble and too high a cost not to be able to spread without aerating. Look elsewhere. Update: Purchased in Feb 2025. Used 2x. Now its October and the chain snapped just 40 feet into trying to use for fall. No idea on where to get replacement. Again this thing is worthless as a drop spreader as it cant spin without spikes in ground and chain connected to the first spike. Hate this thing.

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Was prepared for an assembly battle based on the reviews. It was pretty straightforward and fast with an adjustable crescent wrench and drill (I think there were just two different bolt head sizes). Probably spent 30 to 45 mins assembling. No missing parts. If you have a set of calipers get them out. They don’t label the hardware so when they call for a 2″ vs a 2.5″ it makes it quick to grab the right one, same with the washers as they have a few variations of them and it’s hard to know exactly which they are calling for without thinking it through or measuring based on the BOM dimensions to confirm. Don’t bother swapping out the wheel bolts like some have mentioned. Unless you are hauling this thing around a lot on non grass surfaces where you need the wheels down they aren’t even being used. I retract my wheels so they don’t touch the ground. I think that is why the bolt is so long so you can catch it over the rail and keep them locked off the ground if you don’t need to engage and disengage it while on the move. Yes, shouldered bolts would be better but seem unnecessary to upgrade them given the limited action the wheels would typically get. It worked well. I’ve used it twice to spread and spike fertilizer and no complaints. With the larger granules it took a little trial and error to get the spread rate just right.
Customer Review: Overall, I’m very pleased with this gear. It’s built solidly and works as advertised, and I’m thrilled that it saves me tons of time when applying fertilizer on our large yard. Not surprisingly, it’s a bit more awkward to use on a smaller lawn, such as our front yard. The spikes appeared to work effectively. My one area of frustration was with the parts. When it arrived, I carefully sorted and counted the parts, because other reviewers noted problems with missing parts. Sure enough, I was missing a few items (several bolts missing from a smaller package). I submitted a message on the company’s website asking for the parts, but never heard back, so rather than wait, I just got them at our local hardware store. I’ll also note that the instructional video on the website (which explains how to put it together), while very good, is a little out of date. Several items that they show on there are no longer part of the design (no spring, some plastic vice metal parts, 1 cotter pin vs 2). Minor issues, and they didn’t impact me being able to follow the instructions. Overall, happy with the product, just frustrating re the lack of quality control on inclusion of parts in the shipment.

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Instructions were easy to follow and operates great being towed behind our lawnmower, much better than hiring a thatcher machine!

Complete Buying Guide for Best Lawn Aerator Tow Behind
Essential Factors We Consider
When choosing the best lawn aerator tow behind, we look at several key factors. First, the type of aeration is crucial; spike aerators create small holes, while plug aerators remove soil cores for deeper penetration. We also consider the working width – wider is generally better for larger yards, saving you time. Durability is paramount, so we prioritize models made from robust materials that can withstand tough conditions. Ease of attachment to your tractor or ATV, along with maneuverability, are also important considerations for a smooth user experience. For those looking to get more done, models with integrated spreaders are a big plus.
Budget Planning
The cost of a tow behind lawn aerator can vary significantly based on its features and build quality. Entry-level models might focus on basic spiking and offer a smaller working width, typically costing between $150-$300. Mid-range options, often featuring wider widths, sturdier construction, or even spreader capabilities, usually fall in the $300-$600 range. High-end, heavy-duty units with advanced features like plug aeration or larger capacities can range from $600 and up. Considering your lawn’s size and specific needs will help you find the best value within your budget. Remember that investing in a quality aerator is an investment in your lawn’s long-term health.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right tow behind lawn aerator depends on your specific lawn needs and the type of tractor or ATV you’ll be using. Whether you need a simple spike aerator, a multi-functional seeder/spreader combo, or a heavy-duty plug aerator, there’s a model out there to help you achieve a healthier, more vibrant lawn. Don’t underestimate the power of aeration for combating compacted soil and improving overall turf quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between a spike aerator and a plug aerator?
A: A spike aerator creates small holes in the soil, which can help with minor compaction and improve surface water infiltration. A plug aerator, on the other hand, removes small cores of soil, which is more effective for relieving severe compaction, improving drainage, and allowing for deeper penetration of air, water, and nutrients. Many tow-behind models are spike aerators, while plug aerators are often a separate category or a more heavy-duty option.
Q: How wide should my tow behind aerator be?
A: The ideal width depends on the size of your lawn and the power of your towing vehicle. For larger yards, a wider aerator (36 inches or more) will significantly speed up the process. For smaller to medium-sized yards, a 30-36 inch width can be perfectly adequate. Ensure your tractor or ATV has enough power to comfortably pull the aerator.
Q: Can I use a tow behind aerator on any type of grass?
A: Yes, tow behind aerators are generally suitable for most common lawn grasses, including Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia. However, the timing of aeration is critical and varies by grass type. Cool-season grasses are best aerated in the fall or spring, while warm-season grasses benefit most from aeration in late spring or early summer. For specific grass types, it’s always good to consult a local lawn care guide.
Q: Do I need to add weight to my tow behind aerator?
A: Many tow behind aerators are designed to accept added weight, especially plug aerators, to help the tines penetrate compacted soil more effectively. You can often use sandbags, cinder blocks, or water jugs. The amount of weight needed will depend on your soil’s condition and the specific aerator model’s recommendations. Start with less weight and gradually add more if needed.
Q: How often should I aerate my lawn?
A: Most lawns benefit from aeration once a year. However, heavily used lawns, those with clay soil, or areas experiencing significant compaction might benefit from aeration twice a year, typically in the spring and fall for cool-season grasses, or late spring/early summer for warm-season grasses. Over-aerating can stress your lawn, so it’s best to stick to the recommended schedule.
Investing in a quality lawn aerator tow behind is one of the best decisions you can make for the health and vitality of your lawn. By allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone, you’re setting the stage for thicker, greener, and more resilient turf. Whether you choose a multi-functional unit or a dedicated aerator, the long-term benefits are undeniable. Browse our selection and find the perfect partner for your lawn care journey today!
