Customer Reviews

Customer Review: We gave this item a 5 star, not because the seeder works great, which I’m sure it will once is together, but because this company is GREAT to deal with. In the process of assembling the seeder, we found we were missing some parts. We contacted the company. They replied the next day, asked what we needed and the parts we’re shipped. Though the directions for assembly are somewhat difficult to follow, I would not hesitate to buy from this company again!UPDATE: Suchtale was great sending the missing parts but it’s been over a week and the parts are caught up in shipping. They’ve been in a port in Japan for five days and don’t seem to be going anywhere at this point.

Customer Review: I am a retired skilled trades worker, and this took me a while to put together. I would’ve spent the extra hundred dollars someplace else to purchase one. Not a project for a do it yourself . Unless you have a lot of extra time, weekends are precious you know.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Was prepared for an assembly battle based on the reviews. It was pretty straightforward and fast with an adjustable crescent wrench and drill (I think there were just two different bolt head sizes). Probably spent 30 to 45 mins assembling. No missing parts. If you have a set of calipers get them out. They don’t label the hardware so when they call for a 2″ vs a 2.5″ it makes it quick to grab the right one, same with the washers as they have a few variations of them and it’s hard to know exactly which they are calling for without thinking it through or measuring based on the BOM dimensions to confirm.Don’t bother swapping out the wheel bolts like some have mentioned. Unless you are hauling this thing around a lot on non grass surfaces where you need the wheels down they aren’t even being used. I retract my wheels so they don’t touch the ground. I think that is why the bolt is so long so you can catch it over the rail and keep them locked off the ground if you don’t need to engage and disengage it while on the move. Yes, shouldered bolts would be better but seem unnecessary to upgrade them given the limited action the wheels would typically get.It worked well. I’ve used it twice to spread and spike fertilizer and no complaints. With the larger granules it took a little trial and error to get the spread rate just right.

Customer Review: Overall, I’m very pleased with this gear. It’s built solidly and works as advertised, and I’m thrilled that it saves me tons of time when applying fertilizer on our large yard. Not surprisingly, it’s a bit more awkward to use on a smaller lawn, such as our front yard. The spikes appeared to work effectively. My one area of frustration was with the parts. When it arrived, I carefully sorted and counted the parts, because other reviewers noted problems with missing parts. Sure enough, I was missing a few items (several bolts missing from a smaller package). I submitted a message on the company’s website asking for the parts, but never heard back, so rather than wait, I just got them at our local hardware store. I’ll also note that the instructional video on the website (which explains how to put it together), while very good, is a little out of date. Several items that they show on there are no longer part of the design (no spring, some plastic vice metal parts, 1 cotter pin vs 2). Minor issues, and they didn’t impact me being able to follow the instructions.Overall, happy with the product, just frustrating re the lack of quality control on inclusion of parts in the shipment.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Fantastic ! Does everything I wanted! Just takes a while and patience to put it together! This one came with allThe tools to put it together with! If you are looking for a duel purpose shredder unit this is it ! Heavy construction!

Customer Review: 1st, Amazon sent me one that was clearly opened where someone had attempted assembly, gave up, and sent it back in as some bolts had nuts on them and some tell tale markings inside of screws.Agreed that all these nuts and bolts are primarily in one bag and counts are random. I was missing a huge washer for wheel and was lucky I’m a mechanic and had a spare that would fit over the axle. The assembly was annoying due to the above and having to sort nuts and bolts. But what makes it worse is that with them all being in one bag, you can’t determine what is what as the instructions tell you what to use, but unless experienced with m5 m6 measurements, you have no clue.Assembly took about 2.5 hours or so.Once it’s put together it wasn’t bad until it was.The spikes are sharp and do okay with semi damp soil. They don’t puncture dry too much if it isn’t super weighed down. The spreading is questionable. Some basic 20 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass I realized wasn’t even dropping out with the lever set at 2.5 out of 6. Moved it to halfway which helped.Largest problem is in what another reviewer stated that I missed. This has to aerate in order to spread. So if you want to drop grass seeds and then some fertilizer, you’ll still have to have the spikes in the ground as that’s the only way the spreader rotates via a chain connected to spike rod. This thing is too much trouble and too high a cost not to be able to spread without aerating. Look elsewhere.Update: Purchased in Feb 2025. Used 2x. Now its October and the chain snapped just 40 feet into trying to use for fall. No idea on where to get replacement. Again this thing is worthless as a drop spreader as it cant spin without spikes in ground and chain connected to the first spike. Hate this thing.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I was using a drop spreader to fertilize my lawn prior to purchasing this spreader. I have 1-1/2 acres and use about 1-3/4 bags (15,000 sf/bag). I decided to research a broadcast spreader and found positive reviews about this EarthWay 2050P. I wanted one which would hold a 40lb bag without feeling overloaded. My property also includes some small hills and uneven surfaces so the large inflatable wheels was appealing to me. I received the spreader this week, it arrived in its original box, and completely assembled. All I had to do was rotate the handle up and tighten. I used it today and covered my entire property very quickly. This is an obvious improvement over the drop spreader but I also found the Earthway to operate with ease, it spread consistently and worked flawlessly. The control mechanism seems well built and the padded handle is a nice feature. When the shut-off lever is moved to the off position, it is a positive “Off” with no fertilizer leaking out. The entire spreader seems to be well built. I will now fertilize my property four (4) times a year rather than 2. Great Product!

Customer Review: First off I should disclose that this is only my second spreader. The house we bought came with several items for yard care and one was a Scotts spreader. It turned out to be badly worn out and would barely push along. Upon inspection I could see the cheap little axle was to blame. The hopper had a poorly designed hole to drop product onto the spreader and the lever that opened/closed the hole was garbage. Cheap plastic tires too.I believe in buying something that’s engineered to handle heavy loads and then not abusing it. So I researched and came up with the Earthway brand, and saw improvements in all the above areas with this model. Better drop system, better axle, wheels and designed for up to 80 lbs. I’m not disappointed! It’s easy to use and floats over the grass. The hopper will handle very big loads as well and it only throws the product forward, not on your shoes. I did have some issue with wet sand, but anything wet will clump and be difficult to spread.Upon inspecting Earthway’s line up, a cheaper model may have done the job for me as my yard isn’t the biggest. Now that I know the quality of the spreader they make I would have considered this. Still, it’s nice to know I’ve got an 80 lb designed spreader and wheels, axle etc. to handle whatever I throw at it.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Lawn Aerator and Seeder

Essential Factors We Consider

When choosing the best lawn aerator and seeder, we look at several key factors to ensure you get a tool that meets your needs. Firstly, we consider the type of aeration it provides – whether it’s core aeration (pulling plugs) or spike aeration (punching holes). For combo units, the effectiveness of both the aerator and the seeder is paramount. We also evaluate the build quality and materials, aiming for durable options that can withstand regular use. Ease of use, including assembly and operation, is crucial, as is the capacity of the seeder hopper. Finally, the type of lawn and soil conditions it’s best suited for plays a significant role. For instance, some aerators are better for compacted soil, while others are ideal for certain grass types.

Budget Planning

Lawn aerator and seeder combos range in price, offering options for various budgets. Basic manual spike aerators that also spread seed are generally the most affordable. Tow-behind units, especially those with larger capacities and more robust construction, will naturally come with a higher price tag. When planning your budget, consider not just the initial purchase price but also the potential longevity and effectiveness of the tool. Investing a little more in a well-built unit can often save you money in the long run by lasting longer and performing better, ensuring your lawn receives the best care. Remember to factor in the cost of seed, fertilizer, or other materials you’ll be using.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right lawn aerator and seeder is a significant step towards a healthier, more beautiful lawn. Whether you opt for a simple push model or a heavy-duty tow-behind unit, the benefits of aerating and seeding are undeniable. Understanding your lawn’s specific needs, your yard size, and your budget will guide you to the perfect tool. Regular aeration and seeding, especially during the optimal times of year, will dramatically improve your lawn’s resilience, density, and overall appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between spike aeration and core aeration?

A: Spike aeration involves punching holes into the soil, which is less disruptive but can still help improve air and water penetration. Core aeration, on the other hand, pulls out plugs of soil, providing more significant relief from compaction and allowing for better nutrient exchange. Most combo units utilize spike aeration.

Q: How often should I aerate my lawn?

A: The ideal frequency depends on your soil type and lawn’s condition. For most lawns, aerating once a year is sufficient. If you have heavily compacted soil or high-traffic areas, you might consider aerating twice a year. It’s generally best to aerate when your grass is actively growing, usually in the spring or fall. Knowing the best time to aerate and seed is crucial for maximum benefit.

Q: Can I use a lawn aerator and seeder in any soil type?

A: Most aerators work best in moist, but not waterlogged, soil. Very dry or extremely wet soil can make aeration difficult or ineffective. For compacted soil, a good aerator is essential, but you might need to consider specialized options if you have particularly challenging soil, like very dense clay or rocky ground.

Q: Do I need to use a spreader if I have an aerator/seeder combo?

A: If your unit is a true aerator and seeder combo, it typically includes a spreader mechanism. This allows you to spread seeds or fertilizer as the aerator works. If you are only aerating and want to seed later, you might use a separate spreader, or some aerators can be used with a spreader attachment.

Q: What are the benefits of using a tow-behind aerator and seeder?

A: Tow-behind models are ideal for larger properties. They reduce the physical effort required, as they can be pulled by a lawn tractor or ATV. They often have larger capacities and cover more ground in a single pass, making them highly efficient for extensive lawn care.

Investing in a quality lawn aerator and seeder is a game-changer for any homeowner looking to maintain a healthy, lush lawn. By improving soil structure and introducing new grass, you’re setting the stage for a more resilient and vibrant landscape. Explore the options above and find the perfect tool to help your lawn thrive. Don’t forget to consider these tools if you’re looking for a specific lawn aerator for your yard or a dedicated push aerator for lawn care.
