Broke on first use! I would not recommend. Follow – up: I was contacted by this company after receiving a refund. They sent a replacement at no charge. Customer Review:

I have been using this trimmer for several months now. I have several other much more expensive hedge trimmers that do not have the features that this one does. The blade length at 20 inches is in the middle of the range of my trimmers however the rotating head make this flexible and most versatile. I have to admit that I do not always oil my hedge trimmer blades before or after every use like I should. This is the first and only hedge trimmer that I have which has a built in blade oiler. What a great idea. All chainsaws have this so why shouldn’t my hedge trimmer? That was a super great feature addition I didn’t realize I needed until I used it. I have used the tool now quite a bit and crossed my fingers that this wasn’t another imported one and done trash heap tool. It has lasted already for several months of weekly usage, which is a good sign, and the motor is brushless (another quality sign). The tool comes with a scabbard to protect the blades. Dewalt batteries slide in and out easily and work as they should. Excellent Tool!

Customer Reviews

Customer Review:

I already had the B & D 36 volt string trimmer. I am very pleased with its quality and performance. When I saw that there was a hedge trimmer that uses the same battery system I realized the practicality of having both tools. Being able to use each without the encumbrance of an electric cord is a fantastic convenience. This is especially true of the hedge trimmer where there is the added risk of cutting the cord–something I have done on numerous occasions with corded machines. While the string trimmer came with a 36 volt battery, this hedge trimmer has been upgraded to a 40 volt battery. B & D assures that both battery sizes are compatible with either machine. Likewise the chargers for each are interchangeable. So, I can use either battery in either machine, and either charger will charge either battery. I have tried these exchanges and they do work as claimed. The hedge trimmer is relatively light, very powerful, and well balanced. My previous trimmer was only 18 inches but was more cumbersome than this 24 inch device. I confidently recommend giving this trimmer, as well as the entire 40 volt “system” of Black & Decker tools, serious consideration.

Customer Review:

I have put off reviewing this trimmer because I wanted to really use it a lot so I knew exactly what to write. In short: this trimmer is LIBERATING!For years, my family used a corded trimmer. The amount of time spent hauling out the extra long cords, the anger that accompanies the use of said cords, and the sheer danger of tripping over the cords, and cutting right through the cords… well, you can see why I finally bit the bullet and ordered this CORDLESS trimmer. We have hedges all along the sidewalk in front of the house, and assorted bushes around the foundation. I can now get them all trimmed in a fraction of the time, and without worrying about the battery running down. I can now start the thing up, walk along the front hedges, and get a nice, even cut all down the sidewalk… without tripping over a cord!I highly recommend this trimer to anyone with lots of cutting to do. One day this summer I did our house, then went down the street and did everything at my boyfriend’s house. The battery still had a lot of charge left. The only issue is if you are really out of shape and/or short, you may get a bit tired trying to reach way up to the top of an overgrown bush… trust me, I know… The blades are larger and better quality than our old one’s, and way sharper. It also cuts some impressively large evergreen branches. So, good battery life, quick recharger, no cords, good quality… how can you miss? I no longer question spending the money on a higher-end trimmer, and I also do not regret going with battery vs. gas.My only suggestion is that you spray some WD40 onto the blades between use. This may not be an issue in warm, dry areas, but in New England, it can help slow corrosion, as well as offer lubrication.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review:

I like this trimmer. It is fine for doing light duty trimming in areas that you could not reach with a pole.I chose this brand because I already had a couple of old Worx batteries from a 6 year old lawn trimmer. The batteries are the same although they’ve been updated in their labeling a bit. The charger is significantly different, which is good, because that old wall wart charger took a long time to charge a battery. I was a bit worried because my lawn trimmer would go through batteries pretty quick, and I’m still not sure this trimmer would work well with only one battery. One battery was enough for my testing, but I wouldn’t expect it to last more than 30 minutes with constant trimming however.Honestly, next to my “Brand X” 18V cordless hedge trimmer, this Worx looks and sounds a little underpowered. Of course the “Brand X” is a hand trimmer, and not on a pole. The pole version of that brand’s trimmer may be lighter duty as well. The Worx did OK actually cutting, but just looking at it, I can see that it would have its limitations. The trim head is easy to adjust and goes from 90 degrees down to 45 degrees up (135 degree range). The plastic “scabbard” has a mounting hole for the wall so you can use it to hang the trimmer head while not in use. I guess you hang the pole on a hook then. I didn’t see anything in the box for hanging that.I agree with what I read in other reviews. It does get heavy after a while, and initially the pole on mine wouldn’t stay extended either. I was able to tighten it up with a screwdriver and a allen wrench. If you over tighten it (like I did), you won’t be able to move the orange release lever, but after loosening it enough to work the lever, it still was able to grip the pole tightly and not move while in use. I also agree that a short handle attachment to make this a light duty hand trimmer would have been very nice. It may be a bit underpowered to use as hand trimmer, but it is notably lighter than my “Brand X”, and I think it would have made a nice light trimmer (light duty and light weight). Also as others have said, there is no grab handle, which is a real head scratcher since the grass timmer has an adjustable grab handle and it is not nearly as long. The back handle does rotate, but I found no use for that. It was easier just to rotate my grip. One thing I didn’t like about this trimmer that I didn’t see mentioned much is that the trigger can get hung up where it needs a more grip strength to keep it pressed than I would like. Overall though, its pretty nice and got the job done.

Customer Review:

I have a WORX weed Wacker and 2 batteries already, so adding this is helpful. I really like how easy it is to just add a battery and start trimming bushes. The head can be set to different angles, and the length can be set fairly long, allows to me to reach back of larger holly bushes. It is really nice not to have to check and add oil, change the oil, clean the air filter, and change spark plugs. I no longer have to worry about touching the hot parts while holding this high. It is also lighter weight than my gas one.It does have some drawbacks though. It is not as strong as the gas one and can not cut branches thicker than my pinky finger. But it is easier to use, just need to trim more often. The pole only shortens some and doesn’t go down to just a handle – still has some awkward length to it. It is heavy/awkward at long length with all the weight at the head. I always bring the batteries inside and place on charger after use, read hot/cold can drain them over time. My guess is batteries will need replaced after a few years and will be $.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review:

My father had an electric hedge trimmer that he said didn’t cut much of anything. I tried it once and it was totally useless. More like massaging the bushes. Consequently I inherited from him the habit of using manually operated shears. Finding one of those with straight blades that actually cut was kind of annoying. After watching a couple yard care Youtube videos decided to try an electric trimmer. Due to the experience above I suspected I needed to spend $70 on one of the big ones to get one that could really cut. The 24” (22″?) B&D’s were out of stock when I was ready to purchase so I bought this one based on the reviews wondering if it could live up to those reviews. For the low price I had severe doubts.Cue parting clouds, sunbeams, and trumpets. Hey, this thing actually cuts! In 20 minutes I cut what would have taken a couple days with the shears. The limiting factor was greens waste bin space. Stuffed a couple and had to stop. Plus shaping was much easier so the bushes look better.I used a 100’ “contractors” extension cord I bought on Amazon, actually I bought two different cords for different uses, so I test fit both and both sockets fit the trimmer. The wire fit in the hole for the retention hook and I had no problems with the cording popping off.It has trouble cutting thicker woody branches (perhaps around a half-inch) but that matches the description so no problem. It appears to be a trade-off. In exchange for being very light and easy to handle, you trade-away the cutting power of a higher amperage motor and the reach of the 22” and 24” trimmers. So if all your bushes are not much taller than you are and you don’t have to reach back too much, then this one is great. If you have giant bushes with thick branches then you might want more power and reach.Extremely happy with this purchase. Less effort, more productivity, less time, bushes look better, and for a low cost.

Customer Review:

I am so happy I bought this electric saw. I was skeptical that it would be worth it to trim my boxwoods, but I am oh-so glad I tried it! I bought it because a few days before I’d trimmed just one of my boxwoods and it took most of the afternoon, by hand, and I was hot, my hands were sore, and I was tired. I figured, “Good grief, I’ve gotta try something different or I’ll be trimming for a week.” So I ordered this 17” saw, and frankly, I’m amazed at what a good job it did! Not only did it trim my largest boxwoods, it also trimmed my tall, thick hard wood stemmed euonymus’s. I usually have to get out my arm length heavy-duty clippers to battle those. I didn’t think this little saw would cut through their tough thick boughs, but it did. All within just minutes, rather than hours, and days! I had so much fun I started trimming other things I hadn’t thought of- and best of all, I used it to trim my tough ivy off some boulders they’d completely swallowed up a few years ago. It was easy-peazie, just swooped them back and forth slightly above the face of the rocks, the saw did it all- broke the ivy, and trimmed it so beautifully-done in moments. Normally, I’d be out there for hours on my knees, clipping with my hand clippers, and sweating amongst spiders on the ground, trying to fight bugs and the ivy off. Instead, I was done with all my work in less than a half of an afternoon. I even trimmed the heavy large vinca which always tries to take over my path-and which I normally have to slowly cut by hand, but it was cut with this saw like a hot knife through butter- what fun! All in about the same time it takes to walk down the path. No kneeling at all! Normally it takes me hours and hours on my knees on the gravel to do that path. I’m an older woman and had no problem with the weight using this. My hands weren’t tired when I was done. Seriously, why didn’t I buy this a lot sooner? I think next spring I’ll plant more boxwoods. WooHoo!

Complete Buying Guide for Best Hedge Trimmer And Strimmer

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best hedge trimmer and strimmer, we look at several key features. Power source is crucial – do you need the freedom of cordless, the consistent power of corded, or the raw strength of gas? Blade length matters too; longer blades cover more ground but can be heavier, while shorter blades offer more control for detailed work. We also consider the type of motor (brushed vs. brushless), as brushless motors generally offer better efficiency, longer life, and more power. Ergonomics play a big role; things like weight distribution, handle comfort, and vibration reduction are vital for comfortable use, especially during longer tasks. For hedge trimmers, cut capacity is important – how thick of a branch can it handle? And for strimmers, line feed mechanisms and head articulation can greatly improve usability.

Budget Planning

Hedge trimmers and strimmers come in a wide range of prices. Corded electric models are typically the most affordable, while high-end battery-powered units with advanced features and powerful motors can be a significant investment. Gas-powered options often fall in the middle or higher end, depending on their power and build quality. When budgeting, remember to factor in the cost of any necessary accessories like extension cords, replacement blades, or batteries and chargers if they aren’t included. Our recommendations cover a spectrum of price points, ensuring you can find a great tool that fits your budget.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right hedge trimmer and strimmer depends on your specific needs, the size of your yard, and the types of plants you’ll be working with. By considering the factors we’ve outlined and looking at our top picks, you can make an informed decision that will keep your garden looking its best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between a hedge trimmer and a strimmer?

A: A hedge trimmer is designed with two blades that move in opposition to cut through branches and foliage for shaping hedges and bushes. A strimmer (also known as a string trimmer or weed whacker) uses a rotating nylon line to cut grass and weeds, ideal for edging lawns and tackling overgrown areas where a mower can’t reach.

Q: Are cordless hedge trimmers powerful enough?

A: Modern cordless hedge trimmers, especially those with brushless motors and higher voltage batteries (like 40V or higher), are very powerful and can handle most common hedging tasks effectively. For extremely thick hedges or commercial use, gas-powered might still be preferred, but for most homeowners, cordless is more than sufficient.

Q: How do I maintain my hedge trimmer?

A: Regular maintenance includes cleaning the blades after each use, oiling them to prevent rust, and checking for any loose parts. For battery-powered models, proper battery storage and care are essential. Always store your trimmer in a dry place, ideally with a blade cover.

Q: What blade length should I look for in a hedge trimmer?

A: For small to medium hedges, a blade length of 18-22 inches is usually ideal. For larger hedges or long stretches, a longer blade (24 inches or more) can speed up the job but may make the trimmer heavier and harder to maneuver.

Q: Can a hedge trimmer be used as a strimmer?

A: No, a hedge trimmer and a strimmer are distinct tools designed for different purposes. A hedge trimmer has blades for cutting woody stems, while a strimmer uses a nylon line for cutting grass and light weeds. Attempting to use one for the other’s job is ineffective and could damage the tool.

Achieving a perfectly manicured garden doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right tools, like a powerful hedge trimmer and an efficient strimmer, you can tackle your garden maintenance with confidence. Whether you’re shaping intricate hedges or taming unruly lawn edges, investing in quality equipment will make all the difference.
