Customer Reviews
Customer Review:
These clipper shears are AWESOME❤️❤️ I bought these after buying 2 other pair of shears that were horrible!!! There’s an adjustment tab at the top of these shears that let’s you vary how wide the clipper handles open, which makes it user-friendly for smaller hands, as well as larger ones. I also love how the scissor part is longer than just your small clippers… You can get a little higher branches and not have to reach so far. These are nice and sharp and cut cleanly. I’ve used them to trim all sorts of branches, plants, & rose deadheading, etc. I love them! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Customer Review:
I’m using the clippers to cut an old growth of honeysuckle from a fence that is falling down. Anyone who has had to deal with old growth honeysuckle knows that sooner or later one runs into large vines but the clippers go right through them. I like the length of the handles. Any longer and the clippers would be to heavy to lift. The angle of the blade to the handle makes for good manovering.

Customer Reviews
Customer Review:
I needed a new pair of shears and bought a pair from my local big box home store. I’m cutting ornamental grasses back, arborvitaes, and some thin branched hedges (privet type hedges). The shears from the box store could not cut this light stuff!! I could not believe! The grass would go between the blades and not get cut, there was a gap.I needed a new pair because my old pair were finally worn out. Since I had to return the useless shears to the big box home store, I decided to see if I could order another pair of what I had because they lasted for YEARS and were great. To my amazement I had a pair of Corona model HS 3911, and they are still being made today, and they were available on Amazon! These Corona HS 3911 shears are perfect for cutting ornamental grasses and thin stuff where you want easy precise cuts. They probably won’t be cutting thick branches, but they are not made for that. If you need to cut thick stuff get loppers. These things are like giant scissors, super sharp, well made, solid steel and hardwood construction. They cut like budda and are identical to the pair I bought YEARS ago. I was thinking I needed to pay $70 or $80 for a decent pair of shears these days given what I got from the home store, but these Corona shears are all you need. I would have happily paid double as long as they were good quality, like the stuff you use to get! Luckily I didn’t have to.If you are on the fence, get these. I’m sure they will last me as many years as my last pair did. Good job Corona!
Customer Review:
They did not come very sharp but I went out immediately anyway and trimmed some small weedy growth of vines and honeysuckle coming over the fence and they worked well in spite of not being as sharp as they should be. The notch helps with larger diameter stuff up to 1/2″ but it struggles to cut that thick, you need to snap it together forcefully. They do seem well-made and built to last. I sharpened them up to my liking after their first use and noted they are easy enough to sharpen on a grinding wheel, you do not need to take them apart which is a plus to grind a nice even edge. Finishing up with a small fine stone, they now have a sharp edge. I’m happy with this purchase!

- ✓ Hard-chrome plated blades offer excellent cutting strength and corrosion resistance.
- ✓ Slightly curved blades designed for optimal cutting efficiency.

Customer Reviews
Customer Review:
I used one of these for a year as a person who does landscape maintenance (for 30 years now). It is super sharp and can cut through rather thick stems. The handles extend way out to reach difficult spots. I like it to reach into smaller palm trees to cut off old palm leaves that have many thorns. Nothing else works as well. It works well to reach up into and trim giant Bird of Paradise plants.I can stand up without stooping to trim lower bushes. In many applications nothing does as well as this tool. The only drawback is that the blades are rather short so if you have large hedges they take too long to use. They are a bit on the pricey side but for me it is well worth it as I have found no other tool that can do the things these do. Another company used to sell these but ARS bought the rights to sell this product. Their price is about $15 less than what I paid for the 1st one from the other company. They are well made and strong but still light in weight.
Customer Review:
My flower bed has rocks instead of mulch. It is dangerous to try to walk on those rocks to try to reach bushes that need to be trimmed. These hedge shears telescope so that I can use them to trim plants that are close and also plants that are otherwise out of reach. They are very easy to adjust, lightweight and very sharp. It is the exactly the right tool for what I needed to do. I foresee many seasons of use ahead with this PERFECT pair of hedge shears.
Complete Buying Guide for Best Hedge Shears For Gardening
Essential Factors We Consider
When choosing the best hedge shears, we look at several key factors to ensure you get a tool that performs well and lasts. Blade material is crucial; high-carbon steel offers durability and sharpness, while features like non-stick coatings can prevent sap buildup. Comfort is paramount, so we examine handle design, grip material, and overall ergonomics – especially for extended use. We also consider blade length, as longer blades cover more ground but can be less precise for detailed work, and vice-versa. Finally, build quality and any unique leverage mechanisms (like power-assist features) are important for ease of use and long-term value. We often compare these to other essential gardening shears to understand their place in your toolkit.
Budget Planning
Hedge shears vary significantly in price, from budget-friendly options to professional-grade tools. Generally, you can find decent manual hedge shears starting around $20-$30. Mid-range models, offering better materials and features, typically fall between $40-$70. High-end or specialized shears, especially those with advanced ergonomics or unique leverage systems, can cost $80 or more. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, investing a little more can often mean buying a tool that’s more comfortable, more effective, and lasts much longer, ultimately saving you money in the long run. Consider your gardening frequency and the types of hedges you have when setting your budget.
Final Thoughts
Selecting the right hedge shears depends heavily on your specific needs and the size of your garden. For general maintenance and ease of use, models like the Fiskars Power-Lever or Powergear2 offer excellent leverage and comfort. If precision is your top priority, ARS shears are an outstanding choice. Remember to also consider how you’ll store your shears and what kind of maintenance they require to keep them in top condition. Proper care ensures your hedge shears remain a reliable part of your gardening arsenal for years to come.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I choose the right blade length for hedge shears?
A: Shorter blades (6-10 inches) offer more control and precision for intricate shaping, making them ideal for smaller hedges or detailed work. Longer blades (10+ inches) cover more ground faster, which is great for larger, more uniform hedges, but can be more cumbersome for detailed cuts.
Q: Are electric hedge trimmers better than manual hedge shears?
A: It depends on your needs. Electric hedge trimmers are faster and more powerful for large jobs, but manual hedge shears offer more control for precise shaping, are quieter, and don’t require power. For smaller gardens or detailed work, manual shears are often preferred.
Q: How often should I sharpen my hedge shears?
A: Sharpening your hedge shears regularly, ideally after every few uses or at least once per season, will ensure they make clean cuts and reduce the effort required. Dull blades can tear plant tissue, making them more susceptible to disease.
Q: What is the difference between hedge shears and pruning shears?
A: Hedge shears are designed for cutting multiple small stems and shaping hedges, typically with longer blades and handles for leverage. Pruning shears (or hand pruners) are designed for cutting single, thicker branches, with shorter blades and a more ergonomic grip for one-handed use. If you need tools for cutting branches, check out our guide on the best pruning shears for branches.
Q: Can I use hedge shears for cutting thick branches?
A: Most standard hedge shears are not designed for thick branches. While some might have a notch for slightly larger stems, attempting to cut branches that are too thick can damage the blades and the tool. For thicker branches, you should use loppers or a pruning saw.
Investing in a quality pair of hedge shears can transform your gardening experience, making hedge maintenance not only easier but also more enjoyable. Whether you’re looking for extended reach, superior leverage, or precision control, there’s a perfect pair out there for you. Browse our selection, consider your garden’s needs, and happy trimming!
