Customer Review: Amazon sent me one that was clearly opened where someone had attempted assembly, gave up, and sent it back in as some bolts had nuts on them and some tell tale markings inside of screws. Agreed that all these nuts and bolts are primarily in one bag and counts are random. I was missing a huge washer for wheel and was lucky I’m a mechanic and had a spare that would fit over the axle. The assembly was annoying due to the above and having to sort nuts and bolts. But what makes it worse is that with them all being in one bag, you can’t determine what is what as the instructions tell you what to use, but unless experienced with m5 m6 measurements, you have no clue. Assembly took about 2.5 hours or so. Once it’s put together it wasn’t bad until it was. The spikes are sharp and do okay with semi damp soil. They don’t puncture dry too much if it isn’t super weighed down. The spreading is questionable. Some basic 20 lbs of Kentucky bluegrass I realized wasn’t even dropping out with the lever set at 2.5 out of 6. Moved it to halfway which helped. Largest problem is in what another reviewer stated that I missed. This has to aerate in order to spread. So if you want to drop grass seeds and then some fertilizer, you’ll still have to have the spikes in the ground as that’s the only way the spreader rotates via a chain connected to spike rod. This thing is too much trouble and too high a cost not to be able to spread without aerating. Look elsewhere. Update: Purchased in Feb 2025. Used 2x. Now its October and the chain snapped just 40 feet into trying to use for fall. No idea on where to get replacement. Again this thing is worthless as a drop spreader as it cant spin without spikes in ground and chain connected to the first spike. Hate this thing.

First, unlike the store ones which have glossy paint which flakes off right away, this is entirely powder coated. The handle has a decent rubber grip attached, and the tines are actually bolted in rather than just fit or stuck in with spring pressure. The tires actually have a solid rubber tread and don’t feel like they’ll fall off in a year. The packaging was really excellent, the directions were clear, and they included all the wrenches and even gloves. I recommend getting a socket set out if you don’t want to take forever, and definitely wear some gloves to handle the tines, they are sharp. Went together great, worked great. If I have one criticism, it is that the hitch bracket section is a bit squirrely to put together and I would have much preferred some sort of monolothic hitch bracket instead of the two-way flat stock sandwich. For the price, though, I can’t really complain especially with powder coating.

Customer Review: Update: Four stars to 5. Worked perfectly! However, much like measure twice cut once…start off with no weight on the dethatcher. I placed two patio bricks on it and it dug right into my yard PLUS clogged the tines! LOL! With zero weight it worked perfectly. Assembly: You’ll need the following tools, a 1/2″ socket and 1/2″ boxed end wrench for the vast majority of the nuts and bolts (boxed end wrenches will work but just takes more work and time). A 9/16′ and 3/4″ wrench to install the wheels. A large flat blade screw driver to install the tines and a pair of pliers to clamp down the guide wires installed through the tines. Make sure to set aside about 1 1/2 hours or so to put it together. I set up a couple of saw horses and placed a sheet of plywood on them so I could sit on a chair and assemble the dethatcher. Follow the pictorial instructions carefully. Make sure to place the dethatcher in the same direction as the pictures so you can follow along with the process. If you look at the pictures carefully it’s easy to follow. I found all parts were included and the drawings of the nuts and bolts match exactly with the size of the actual bolts, no guessing. A bonus is the bolts are grade 5 (heavy duty). When installing the tines, make sure to place the unit on a solid surface so you’ll be able to bend the tine holders easily. I set mine on the concrete floor. Once I put it together I was ready to go to work. Now here is why I gave the unit a 4 instead of a 5 star rating. We have a John Deere D140 riding lawn mower. I found the hitch on the dethatcher was not long enough to reach the towing connection on the mower. I had to remove one of the bolts and move the connection forward, securing it with only one bolt. It worked, but the hitch should be about an inch longer. The dethatcher worked flawlessly. I didn’t even have to add any additional weight. I was pleasantly surprised.
