Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I already had the B & D 36 volt string trimmer. I am very pleased with its quality and performance. When I saw that there was a hedge trimmer that uses the same battery system I realized the practicality of having both tools. Being able to use each without the encumbrance of an electric cord is a fantastic convenience. This is especially true of the hedge trimmer where there is the added risk of cutting the cord–something I have done on numerous occasions with corded machines. While the string trimmer came with a 36 volt battery, this hedge trimmer has been upgraded to a 40 volt battery. B & D assures that both battery sizes are compatible with either machine. Likewise the chargers for each are interchangeable. So, I can use either battery in either machine, and either charger will charge either battery. I have tried these exchanges and they do work as claimed. The hedge trimmer is relatively light, very powerful, and well balanced. My previous trimmer was only 18 inches but was more cumbersome than this 24 inch device. I confidently recommend giving this trimmer, as well as the entire 40 volt “system” of Black & Decker tools, serious consideration.

Customer Review: I have put off reviewing this trimmer because I wanted to really use it a lot so I knew exactly what to write. In short: this trimmer is LIBERATING!For years, my family used a corded trimmer. The amount of time spent hauling out the extra long cords, the anger that accompanies the use of said cords, and the sheer danger of tripping over the cords, and cutting right through the cords… well, you can see why I finally bit the bullet and ordered this CORDLESS trimmer. We have hedges all along the sidewalk in front of the house, and assorted bushes around the foundation. I can now get them all trimmed in a fraction of the time, and without worrying about the battery running down. I can now start the thing up, walk along the front hedges, and get a nice, even cut all down the sidewalk… without tripping over a cord!I highly recommend this trimer to anyone with lots of cutting to do. One day this summer I did our house, then went down the street and did everything at my boyfriend’s house. The battery still had a lot of charge left. The only issue is if you are really out of shape and/or short, you may get a bit tired trying to reach way up to the top of an overgrown bush… trust me, I know… The blades are larger and better quality than our old one’s, and way sharper. It also cuts some impressively large evergreen branches. So, good battery life, quick recharger, no cords, good quality… how can you miss? I no longer question spending the money on a higher-end trimmer, and I also do not regret going with battery vs. gas.My only suggestion is that you spray some WD40 onto the blades between use. This may not be an issue in warm, dry areas, but in New England, it can help slow corrosion, as well as offer lubrication.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I like this trimmer. It is fine for doing light duty trimming in areas that you could not reach with a pole.I chose this brand because I already had a couple of old Worx batteries from a 6 year old lawn trimmer. The batteries are the same although they’ve been updated in their labeling a bit. The charger is significantly different, which is good, because that old wall wart charger took a long time to charge a battery. I was a bit worried because my lawn trimmer would go through batteries pretty quick, and I’m still not sure this trimmer would work well with only one battery. One battery was enough for my testing, but I wouldn’t expect it to last more than 30 minutes with constant trimming however.Honestly, next to my “Brand X” 18V cordless hedge trimmer, this Worx looks and sounds a little underpowered. Of course the “Brand X” is a hand trimmer, and not on a pole. The pole version of that brand’s trimmer may be lighter duty as well. The Worx did OK actually cutting, but just looking at it, I can see that it would have its limitations. The trim head is easy to adjust and goes from 90 degrees down to 45 degrees up (135 degree range). The plastic “scabbard” has a mounting hole for the wall so you can use it to hang the trimmer head while not in use. I guess you hang the pole on a hook then. I didn’t see anything in the box for hanging that.I agree with what I read in other reviews. It does get heavy after a while, and initially the pole on mine wouldn’t stay extended either. I was able to tighten it up with a screwdriver and a allen wrench. If you over tighten it (like I did), you won’t be able to move the orange release lever, but after loosening it enough to work the lever, it still was able to grip the pole tightly and not move while in use. I also agree that a short handle attachment to make this a light duty hand trimmer would have been very nice. It may be a bit underpowered to use as hand trimmer, but it is notably lighter than my “Brand X”, and I think it would have made a nice light trimmer (light duty and light weight). Also as others have said, there is no grab handle, which is a real head scratcher since the grass timmer has an adjustable grab handle and it is not nearly as long. The back handle does rotate, but I found no use for that. It was easier just to rotate my grip. One thing I didn’t like about this trimmer that I didn’t see mentioned much is that the trigger can get hung up where it needs a more grip strength to keep it pressed than I would like. Overall though, its pretty nice and got the job done.

– Suburban Gardener

Customer Review: I have a WORX weed Wacker and 2 batteries already, so adding this is helpful. I really like how easy it is to just add a battery and start trimming bushes. The head can be set to different angles, and the length can be set fairly long, allows to me to reach back of larger holly bushes. It is really nice not to have to check and add oil, change the oil, clean the air filter, and change spark plugs. I no longer have to worry about touching the hot parts while holding this high. It is also lighter weight than my gas one.It does have some drawbacks though. It is not as strong as the gas one and can not cut branches thicker than my pinky finger. But it is easier to use, just need to trim more often. The pole only shortens some and doesn’t go down to just a handle – still has some awkward length to it. It is heavy/awkward at long length with all the weight at the head. I always bring the batteries inside and place on charger after use, read hot/cold can drain them over time. My guess is batteries will need replaced after a few years and will be $.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: Works just as good as electric plug in type of BD I have been using. This is wonderful tool, well balanced and easy to lift and handle to cut with. Lightweight, with adjustments on it to fit what you like, Battery that came with it was a 2.0 ah type battery, it lasted about 30-45 minutes first time trimming hedges then second time went beyond 45 minutes, so I am pleased with that. After 30 minutes to an hour I am sick of cutting hedges or shrubs and want to take a break, so I just put battery back on charger for 4-5 hours and ready to go again later. There was no assembly really to this, other then the black protective handle which was nothing, easy to put on and very good directions and I think a tool came wih it to do this if not it was a regular phillips screwdriver if that, cannot remember because it was so easy to put on and immediately slip on battery and go to cutting.I have had an electric 22 inch black and decker corded hedge trimmer for 10 plus years and it is still going strong, only reason I bought this was because I needed one battery operated for when I was not near electric source to plug in and I got tired of worrying about the cord all the time.I am very impressed with this 20 volt tool by BD and I highly recommend it for home use around any home at least 1500 sq feet to be able to cut all hedges and shrubs with one battery of 2.0 ah, if you do more or have a larger sq footage home with shrubs and hedges surrounding it on all sides and your home is larger than 1500 sq ft then you will no doubt need another battery for example 2 of the 2.0 ah types in order to do all your cutting at one time other wise you will run out of juice and have to re charge in middle of your work.Very good quality of tool, not cheap made at all, very durable and works really well, cuts very good.

– Home Garden Enthusiast

Customer Review: By way of disclosure, I’m not Woodsy Owl and there’s no way I’m ever going to have an electric pick up. But, I bought a Black + Decker LHT2220 20V Lithium Ion Hedge Trimmer, 22” (new) and I’m never going back to anything with a two cycle engine because (short story) this tool just works. If you’re the type that wants more details: The B+D is crazy light. That means the work is easier and I think it gets done faster and when I wrap up, I’m not as wasted. Start up is easy, just hit the ‘GO’ switch and it cuts really well and is way quieter than the gear I’m used to using. There’s also something it doesn’t do and that’s pump out a steady stream of exhaust in my direction while the engine is running.Clean up is a snap and maintenance seems to be easy as well. I’m not sure how the company figured the battery rating and if you asked me if the way I cut and the volume of stuff I have to trim actually produced the target results, I’d have to ‘hedge’ my bets and say “I don’t think so.” But, it came close enough and if there is an issue, it’s nothing that hooking the battery to the charger and then grabbing lunch won’t fix. Or getting an extra battery and since I also got the 20V weed eater, I do have one of those. Also, the lithium Ion batteries don’t develop memories so I can charge whenever and even leave the batteries in the charger so I know they’ll be good to go.So, after one major job, yes, I can recommend the product and the seller and report that I would buy it again.

Customer Review: I’ve only used it once, but once I get the feel of it, I think it will be good. I just hope there is enough power to cut the hedges.

– New User

Customer Review: Just opened the box. I assume it cuts as advertised. No instructions on how to attach or adjust the Auxiliary Handle, Shoulder Strap or Safety Guard. Not so much of a problem with the Safety Guard because the four screws needed to attach it to the unit were not in the package.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Gas Hedge Trimmer For Thick Branches

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting the best gas hedge trimmer for thick branches, we look at several key aspects. The engine’s power and displacement are crucial for cutting through dense material. Blade length and type matter too; longer blades cover more ground, while dual-action blades offer a cleaner cut with less vibration. We also consider the trimmer’s weight and ergonomics, as a powerful tool can be cumbersome if not designed for comfortable handling during extended use. Finally, durability and ease of maintenance are vital for a tool meant to withstand tough jobs.

Budget Planning

The price of gas hedge trimmers can vary significantly based on brand, engine size, and features. For models specifically designed for thick branches, expect to invest a bit more due to the more powerful engines and robust construction required. While cheaper options might exist, they often compromise on cutting power or durability. It’s wise to set a budget that allows for a quality tool that will last and perform reliably, rather than saving money upfront on a less capable machine. Consider looking at best hedge trimmer for budget buyers if you need to balance cost and performance.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right hedge trimmer for thick branches involves prioritizing power, blade performance, and comfort. While gas models are often the go-to for raw power, modern battery-operated trimmers are rapidly closing the gap. Whichever type you choose, ensure it has the cutting capacity and durability to handle your specific needs. Investing in a quality trimmer will save you time and effort, making hedge maintenance a far more pleasant experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes a hedge trimmer good for thick branches?

A: A hedge trimmer is good for thick branches if it has a powerful engine (for gas models) or a high-voltage battery and motor (for cordless models), a substantial blade length, and a good cutting capacity, often indicated by the maximum branch diameter it can handle. Dual-action blades are also beneficial for a cleaner cut through tougher material.

Q: Are gas or electric hedge trimmers better for thick branches?

A: Traditionally, gas hedge trimmers were considered superior for thick branches due to their raw power. However, high-voltage cordless electric models now offer comparable power and cutting capacity, with the added benefits of being quieter, lighter, and easier to maintain. For extreme heavy-duty work, a powerful gas model might still have an edge, but for most homeowners, a top-tier cordless electric trimmer is an excellent, often more convenient, choice.

Q: How do I maintain my hedge trimmer to ensure it lasts?

A: Regular maintenance is key. For gas trimmers, this includes cleaning the air filter, checking spark plugs, and ensuring proper fuel mix. For both gas and electric models, keeping the blades clean, sharp, and lubricated will ensure optimal performance and longevity. Store your trimmer in a dry place, and use blade covers when not in use to prevent damage.

Q: What is the importance of blade sharpness for cutting thick branches?

A: Sharp blades are crucial. Dull blades can tear branches rather than cut them cleanly, which can damage the plant and put excessive strain on the trimmer’s motor. Sharp blades allow the trimmer to slice through branches smoothly, reducing effort and improving the overall finish of your hedges.

Q: Can a hedge trimmer designed for thick branches also be used for shaping?

A: Yes, while designed for power, most hedge trimmers that handle thick branches can also be used for shaping. However, for very precise shaping, a trimmer with a shorter blade or specific ‘shaping’ features might be more ideal. If your primary need is power for thick branches, you can still achieve good shaping with practice and careful maneuvering.

Tackling dense hedges and thick branches doesn’t have to be a struggle. By choosing one of the best gas hedge trimmers (or their powerful cordless electric counterparts) designed for this purpose, you can achieve professional-looking results with greater ease. These tools offer the power and durability needed to conquer overgrown foliage. Explore our recommended options, consider your specific yard needs, and invest in a hedge trimmer that will make your landscaping tasks more efficient and enjoyable. Don’t forget to check the best hedge trimmer for durability if longevity is a top priority.
